The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) received the first revelation from the angel Jibril that night when the Qur’an descended from Lawhi al-Mahfuth to the lowest heaven.

A miracle happened on a night of blessings, changing the course of history.

Out of the twelve lunar months, Allah Subhanahu Wata’ala selected Ramadan to begin spreading the Holy Qur’an throughout the whole human race.

And from among its days and nights, He picked Lailatul Qadr as its most auspicious night, the occasion of the Quran’s first appearance in human history.

What Is The Meaning of Surah Laylatul Qadr?

Allah begins by declaring:

In the first verse, He says, “We sent it down.”

The Qur’an was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) by Allah, the Creator of humanity; it is not something that originated in his or any other human being’s imagination.

And all of this took place during Ramadan. In Surah Baqarah, Allah declared:

The month of Ramadan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur’an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion.

In Surah ad-Dukhan, Allah called it a blessed night. He said,

Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn [mankind]. Therein is made distinct every precise matter – [every] matter [proceeding] from Us. Indeed, We were to send [a messenger].

Inna Anzalnahu Meaning

The Arabic word Anzala is used to convey sudden transmission. It alludes to Allah’s Word, which Is transmitted down to mankind from Lawh Mahfuz (nearest heaven).

In Laylatul Qadr, Allah sent down the entire Quran all at once.

The angel Jibrill then gradually transmitted it to Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) over a period of 23 years (Makka thirteen years and Madina ten years).

The best and most fortunate night of the year is Laylatul Qadr.

Worship and good actions carried out on this night are more precious than those carried out over a thousand months.

The equivalent of a thousand months is eighty-three years and four months.

The lifetime of the members of his ummah (people), according to the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), is between sixty and seventy years.

Few individuals would live that long.

Indeed, a Muslim may profit from a lifetime’s worth of worship in only one evening.

A thousand months may also be used to describe an incredibly long period of time in Arabic use.

At dusk, the night begins and lasts till dawn; But how time-wise valuable are these few hours?

Our ummah has received favor from Allah, the Almighty, by being granted a night in which good works and worship are more valuable than those carried out in a day.

According to the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), anyone who spends Laylatul Qadr in worship with belief and seeks recompense would have all of his prior transgressions forgiven.

Over the final 10 nights of Ramadan, you ought to seek these benefits.

The Messenger of Allah said:

The greatest times to search for it during the final 10 days of Ramadan are on the odd evenings.

About which of the previous 10 nights is Lailatul Qadr, there has been a great deal of conjecture.

The majority of academics think that nobody knows for sure what night it happens.

According to Ubadah bin Assamit, two men were debating among the Muslims when Allah’s Messenger SAW came out to notify them about Lailatul Qadr.

It was also told that the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) came out to inform his followers about Lailatul Qadr, but because the two were disputing, the information was withheld. Maybe this is for the best of us.

He continued by saying that we should search for it on the 27th, 29th, and 25th days of Ramadan.

Several narrations by Bukhari and Muslims were recorded, and some of the companions reported that it happened on various nights.

According to Ubadah bin Assamit, two men were debating among the Muslims when Allah’s Messenger SAW came out to notify them about Lailatul Qadr.

It was pronounced to be the eve of the 27th by Ubayy bin Ka’b.

According to Abu Saeed al-Khudri, it happened on the evening of the twenty-first.

In addition to the first two, Ibn Abbas listed the twenty-fifth.

When asked what led him to say this, he responded that Allah’s Messenger SAW had told them that the sun will rise on that day without emitting any rays.

Ahmad further stated that Allah’s Messenger SAW advised seeking it on the eve of the twenty-seventh or twenty-ninth day of the month through Abu Hurayra.

According to Ibn Taymiyyah:

Look for it on the twenty-first, twenty-third, twenty-seventh, or twenty-ninth since odd numbers belong to the past [when counting from the first of the month].

Alternatively, as the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) phrased it, “When there are nine left, or seven left, or five left, or three left,” it can be about what’s left.

There will be nine days remaining on the second and seven days left on the fourth in a month with thirty days if the nights are even-numbered.

The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) prayed Qiyam lail throughout that month in the manner described by Abu Saeed al-Khudri in his explanation of the authentic hadith.

The dates for days left and days past will be the same if the month contains twenty-nine days.

The believer should thus search for it for the previous 10 days.

In order to seek Laylatul Qadr during these nights, Allah’s Messenger SAW would withdraw to the mosque and intensify his prayer.

On these nights, according to Aishah Radiyallahu Anha, the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) would worship till dawn, abstain from marital relations, and rouse his family for prayer.

She also requested information on what she should say on the precise Laylatul Qadr night from Allah’s Messenger.

He replied,

Allahumma Innaka Afuwwun Tuhibbul Afwa Fa’Fu ‘Annee, for example.

O Allah, You are Forgiving; You Love Forgiveness; So, Forgive Me.

Due to Laylat al-tremendous Qadr’s bounties, angels frequently descend at this time.

They hear worshipers crying and pleading for pardon that night, and they respond with “Ameen” to them.

The angel Jibrill is mentioned by Ar-Ruh (the Spirit) in the fourth verse.

Jibril is the greatest of the angels, and the words of the ayah help to distinguish him from the others.

Jibril and the angels arrive on earth on this night to deliver Allah’s decree for all events that will occur in the coming year, such as births, deaths, provisions, disasters, and so on.

It is hence the night of decree or destiny.

The precise measures for whatever Allah has given for the upcoming year are brought by the angels.

As they carry out Allah’s commands, they also act as His instrument for doing so.

Angels lack free choice and don’t take independent actions.

They serve Allah and are obedient to Him at all times.

They only follow His instructions, and He is the only one who can give them permission to descend.

Inna Anzalna Surah Benefits

Up until dawn, when the angels descend with each decree with the Lord’s permission, believers and worshipers are at rest.

That night, from dusk to dawn, there is a defense against evil and damage.

The angels wish everyone who spends time in worship a peaceful night.

Some scholars hold that there is no evil since all of Allah’s commands are beneficial, whether or not they are understood by humans.

Even when a directive to eliminate a particular country is given, it is for the benefit of mankind as a whole.

The aspect of Laylatul Qadr will continue to exist every year until the Day of Resurrection.

In a narration by Imam Muslim,

The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said that the night was peaceful, quiet, and normal, neither hot nor cold. The sun rose the following morning, appearing white and without rays.

In this chapter, Allah highlights and demonstrates the Qur’an’s importance and exalted standing.

During Laylatul Qadr (the Night of Decree), during the month of Ramadan, Allah SWT started to send down the Qur’an, and through it, He showed His servant’s extensive generosity for which they had no words to express their thanks.

Because of its prominence and goodness in Allah’s sight as well as the fact that He announces what will transpire in the coming year in terms of deaths, provision, and other divine decrees on this night, Laylatul Qadr has earned its name.

Allah emphasizes its immense significance even further by saying:

Moreover, how are you aware of what the Night of Decree is?

due to the fact that it is incredibly important and vital.

What is the meaning of Night of Destiny?

The Night of Decision or Decree is superior to a thousand months because it possesses the virtue of a thousand months, and actions taken on this night are superior to actions taken throughout the course of a thousand months excluding this night.

It is extremely amazing that Allah SWT has blessed our weak Ummah with a night in which good deeds equal and exceed a thousand months, which is the age of a man who lives for a very long time, around eighty years.

As for the last verse,

By the permission of their Lord, the angels and the ruh (spirit) of angel Jibril usually descends that night with all blessed decrees.

It is a night of blessing and tranquility in that it is free from all illnesses and evils till the break of morning, that is, from the time of sunset to the time of daybreak.

The virtue of Laylatul Qadr is mentioned in several mutawatir hadiths, which claim that it takes place during Ramadan’s last ten nights, particularly on odd-numbered nights, and that it will continue to occur yearly until the Hour arrives.

The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) therefore used to observe Itikaf and perform a number of acts of devotion in the hope that they would coincide with Laylatul Qadr during the final 10 days and nights of Ramadan.

And Allah is the wisest.
